The Loch Portain

This is the passenger and car ferry that sails between Berneray and Leverburgh on South Harris, and forms the only direct route (apart from planes) between Barra and the Uists, and Harris and Lewis.

The Berneray ferry terminal is just on the Berneray side of the causeway. The ferry is only a few years old; it is more stable in heavier seas and has a much larger capacity than the previous ferry on this service. Despite this, it is still advisable to book a place in advance if you have a car, in the summer months.
